Yes really! But it's just a special rule for this mission only. If you bump into any pilgrims in future missions you will be free to play or discard them like any other card.
No! You must discard your whole hand in order to feign death so if a pilgrim is in your hand it isn't possible to feign death.
Be very careful with those pilgrims for this mission!
